Agriculture and Forestry

For many developing countries agriculture is a key sector of the economy for the development of the population. This is another reason why the transfer of experience from Czech agriculture and forestry around the world plays a crucial role.

In 2017, projects in the agriculture sector were implemented in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Moldova, Georgia, and Zambia. These projects were designed to increase the efficiency of agricultural production and small farmers, promote organic farming and boost the capacity of educational and advisory services. Two important aspects all these activities had in common were environmental friendliness and improving food security. The Government allocated CZK 82.5 million to the agriculture sector with its Resolution in 2017. The actual drawdown amounted to CZK 89.8 million.

Projects in the forestry sector were implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, and Mongolia in 2017. The projects were directed mostly to dealing with the issues of degraded soil recultivation, improving forest planning, and renewal of local wood ecotypes. Based on the Government Resolution CZK 15 million was channeled to this sector. The actual drawdown amounted to more than CZK 12 million.

Czech development cooperation thus contributed to the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal No. 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, as well as Sustainable Development Goal No. 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
