The Aragvi Conservation Area region has great potential for development, but this has not yet happened. Moreover, as in other mountainous areas of Georgia, the unique local ecosystem and habitat is under threat. The main objective of this programme is therefore to contribute to the sustainable development of the area through multi-sectoral measures. The programme targets the economic development of the area, in particular through the promotion of community-based tourism and agriculture, strengthening the quality of education and social development (including health). It also includes the establishment of the administrative administration and the draft Management Plan for the Aragvi protected area. This plan then provides a reference framework not only for activities related to the protection of the unique natural landscape in the region, but also for other activities within the project. This will open up opportunities for tourism and traditional farming and livelihoods for local communities. Last but not least, the project also contributes to improving the understanding of protected area management among local people, interest groups and local government. In 2019, the preparation of the Programme was mainly underway, with implementation planned for the period 2020-2022.
