Project is aimed at decreasing the negative impact of the waste waters on the environment and the health of the population and ensuring the sustainable system of waste water treatment in the town of Nisporeni in Moldova. Waste water treatment system in Nisporeni is in a very bad state. There are frequent leaks in the canalization system, technology of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and pumping stations are absent or on the verge of breaking down, the waste water, drained from the STP into the natural recipient, is very contaminated. The waste water further contaminates the sources of the utility and drinking water, and has a negative impact on the environment. Unsuitable situation in the area of sanitation has a negative influence on the health of population.

The amount of illnesses, transferred by water, is very high in Nisporeni, and is normally connected with the contamination of the water with human and animal feces and urines, which include the pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Subsequently, the growth of the illnesses of digestive system can be seen in the last years.

The reconstruction of the two pumping stations and STP will take place in the frame of the project. Simultaneously with the reconstructive works, the employees of the Water line and Canalization (W&C) of Nisporeni will be trained in the maintenance of the equipment, and the complete plan of long-term development of W&C of Nisporeni will be prepared. Furthermore, the educational campaign, aimed at the population and the main industrial producers of the waste waters, will be conducted.

The municipality of Nisporeni will contribute to the realization of the project through the in-kind inputs of construction works during the reconstruction of STP and pumping stations of waste waters.  The preparatory works, coordination with the recipients of the assistance, data mining and field examinations, presentation of the planned activities for the public, and purchase of the part of the technological equipment for the STP reconstruction took place in 2010 and 2011. The reconstruction started in 2012. Construction works and installment of the equipment will be finished in 2013.

The project is complementary to the project of the Austrian Development Agency ADA, co-financed by European Commission and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, "Rehabilitation of the water supply system in the Rayon Nisporeni: Municipalities of Nisporeni, Vărzareşti and Grozeşti, Republic of Moldova", aimed at securing the drinking water supply to Nisporeni and nearby villages. Both of the projects support the international program "Rehabilitation of the water supply and sewage system in the Municipalities of Nisporeni, Vărzăreşti and Grozeşti".
