The project encompass area of municipalities of Doboj and Maglaj, which are located in the north part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both municipalities lie on the river Bosnia and they are in distance of 25 km in north-south direction.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improvement of environment in the north part of Bosnia and Herzegovina which is closely linked with the Millennium development Goal 7 - to ensure environmental sustainability.

The purpose of the project is to improve waste management in municipalities Doboj and Maglaj, which currently does not conform the local legislation/norms. In addition, the capacity of existing landfills, which does not comply with legislative standards, will be exhausted within a few years. There is also a danger of uncontrolled growing of illegal dumps or landfills not satisfying the current requirements for this activity. Poorly organized and implemented waste management can negatively affect the individual components of the environment and harm human health. At the same time, the project will provide activities in education and training in the waste management for the general public, which will be acquainted with possibilities of improving the current situation. In addition, the project and its activities will bring new jobs for local communities.

One of the main outputs of the project will be technical documentation, which is needed by the World Bank as a condition to provide soft loans for implementation of the regional sanitary landfill (RSL) for both municipalities. The technical documentation produced by the project should also enable a smooth closure of the existing landfills.
