Georgia largely struggles with an outdated system of care for persons with disabilities (PWDs) that does not meet either international standards or the needs of the people concerned. As a result, they do not receive both adequate care and appropriate integration into society. Therefore, one of the goals of the Georgian government is to improve the system of services for these people to enable them to live with dignity.

The project, in cooperation with local state authorities, aims to improve the living conditions of PWDs in the municipalities of Martkofi and Dusheti. This improvement should be supported by the construction of family-type housing to provide adequate care for adults with disabilities. The project aims to provide a care and environment that meets the individual needs of PWDs and allows them to be more independent. At the same time, the project should elaborate a national alternative care system, a strategy for deinstitutionalization of residential facilities in the municipalities and update the required minimum standards in this area.

Czech experts and experience available in the Czech Republic will also play a key role in the project. For the long-term sustainability of the outputs, the project will also aim at improving local capacities in the field of care for PWDs together with building general awareness of the needs of PWDs.
