The project responds to the growing environmental and socio-economic challenges associated with land degradation, deforestation, and low agricultural productivity in the Western Province of Zambia. The region, characterized by its dependence on natural resources, is facing the negative impacts of climate change and unsustainable agricultural practices that threaten the livelihoods of local communities and biodiversity.
The project aims to develop a model of sustainable landscape management that would improve soil productivity, increase community resilience, and contribute to the conservation of natural resources. The Czech Republic is involved in the project through People in Need and the Czech Agricultural University, which brings know-how in environmentally friendly technologies and sustainable development. A key part of the Czech contribution is the promotion of the introduction of biogas technologies, which contribute to reducing dependence on wood as the main source of energy, and the promotion of organic farming through the use of bio-slurry as a fertilizer. The project also includes training local communities and service providers, creating financing schemes to support green technologies, and building partnerships with local governments and traditional leaders. The Czech approach emphasizes linking ecological and socio-economic benefits, thus the SLIM project contributes to a better future for the Western Province.
