The compilation of geoscience data is essential for effective planning and appropriate allocation and management of natural resources in Ethiopia, which are currently utilized very poorly. The aim of this project is to create a comprehensive uniform system consisting of information about geological environment, groundwater resources, tectonic and seismic activity or condition of soil and its suitability for infrastructure development. The creation of geological and hydrogeological map of Ethiopia at a scale of 1:1 000 000 will contribute to a more sustainable socioeconomic development of the country and help fulfil SDGs 6 (Clean water and sanitation), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 15 (Life on land).

An interactive online map system accessible for governmental institutions as well as the broader public will also be created. Moreover, the groundwater monitoring systems will be put in place in five selected wells. The final output consisting of maps, explanatory notes, recommended measures and introduction of certain significant trends affecting changes in groundwater resources will be handed over to the federal, regional and local authorities and communities. This will foster more principled, sustainable and effective utilization of natural resources.
