The program of development cooperation between the Czech Republic and Mongolia for the period 2011-2017 defines the sector of water supply and sanitation as a priority. Therein the specified target is to continue the activities related to potable water supply, reasonable use of water sources including the reconstruction of damaged water sources and the related capacity building.

Many international donors such as JICA, UNDP and the development bank KfW act on the issue of water supply in Mongolia. And the demand for water projects stays high.

The project Development of Water Sources Management in Murun, Chovsgul seeks to solve the issue of quality potable water and reliability of water distribution networks. Together with a local company specialized in water management we look for new water sources and suggest solutions of water pumping to water towers. Meanwhile, in one neighborhood supplied from the central water source, the water consumption is overly high and does not correspond to reality. Residents of blocks of flats consume up to 51 l/pers/day. The current rate of consumption has two causes: the damaged main water distribution network that has multiple leaks and the fixed fee for water that does not reflect the quantity and does not motivate people to use water economically.

During the monitoring visit we have observed the first improvements and a reason for a celebration. Having introduced water meters to households in Murun - the water consumption has dropped by 1/4.
