The project, entitled Promoting Nutritious Food Production and Consumption through an Integrated Multisectoral Approach in Mongu, Kaoma and Mumbwa Districts, Zambia, aims to improve community dietary diversity, infant and young child feeding practices, increase crop production, access and consumption of nutritious foods by smallholder farmers.

In collaboration with staff from the Ministry of Agriculture in Zambia, nutritionists and representatives from selected schools (school health and nutrition teachers) from the Ministry of Education, the project will focus on nutrition campaigns at the school and community level. Nutrition clubs and school model gardens will be developed as platforms for awareness raising and skills transfer for teachers and students. Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) will educate pregnant and lactating mothers, and adolescent girls in target communities, on nutrition. In addition, beneficiaries will improve their knowledge of water, health, energy and sanitation services. Another objective of the program is to increase private sector contribution to national nutrition priorities and to increase the basic knowledge needed to improve nutrition and private sector engagement through the promotion of the Good Food Logo, launched by the Zambia Bureau of Standards. Integral to the project will be the introduction of easier access to markets, financial and aggregation services for smallholder farmers, support for crop diversification and post-harvest management. All project activities will be implemented in close collaboration with WFP and relevant ministries.
