Samangan province in the north Afghanistan has been, for a long time, struggling with reduced food security, as well as poor nutrition. The project "Participatory Agricultural Development of the Samangan Province" aims at increasing the stability of livelihoods and food security in the region, particularly among farmers living in 15 selected communities.

One of the major activities of the project is practical training for farmers in the field. These so called Farmer Field Schools (FFS) put an emphasis on the concept of conservation agriculture. The project further supports selected poor families in domestic vegetable production, in order to improve and diversify their nutrition and increase their income. These families are provided both with training and technical support, as well as supplied with necessary equipment for vegetable production.

Under the second project component, project experts will assist selected households in making their businesses sustainable. This includes assistance with the preparation of suitable business plans and implementing them. To support these efforts, households will receive basic necessary technology and materials.

Ensuring active participation of stakeholders in the implementation of the project is a major objective. This includes regular coordination meetings and recapitulation, and sharing technical know-how with governmental and non-governmental institutions active in the sector and project area. The methodology of the project and its various stages are designed in a way which ensures maximum participation and ownership of farmers during whole project, including its design and monitoring.
