The project is based on the priorities of Czech Official development assistance, as well as on Mongolian needs of improving livestock breeding, defined in the National Mongolian Livestock Program approved by the Mongolian government. Livestock is still bred in the traditional way in Mongolia (nomadic pastoralism) and it focuses on quantity rather than the quality of products. This leads to substantial environmental damage caused primarily by overgrazing and subsequent land degradation. Severe natural conditions and a lack of forage further aggravate the situation, causing high annual mortality of cattle during the long winters.

The analytical assessment of the current situation at the bull insemination station (BIS) in Buhug, situated near Ulaanbaatar, as well as at selected farms and insemination centres, will be followed by a number of specialized training sessions for BIS management, insemination technicians and farmers. Farmers involved in dairy production who supply the three biggest Mongolian cities (Ulaanbaatar, Darchan and Erdenet) with milk will receive special attention.

Project activities further include methodological support for the implementation of an effective system of the distribution of insemination doses and liquid nitrogen, as well as the delivery of necessary supplies and equipment (especially insemination equipment, insemination doses, tanks for liquid nitrogen). A significant part of the project implementation is also focused on ensuring that cattle performance is regularly reviewed and properly recorded at selected farms, and on implementing inter-institutional support for the development of an artificial insemination system for the breeding of livestock.
