The project aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality in the Western Province which for that area is among the highest in the world. One of the major causes of this condition is low availability and quality of health services. The most significant problem is a critical shortage of qualified medical staff and almost complete absence of specialists, including midwives.
The project responded to this situation by opening a new midwifery study program at the existing Lewanika Nursing School in Mongu, the capital of Western Province. At the same time the project contributed to strengthening the cooperation between the program and its students and rural health centers, which form the backbone of health care: cooperation took place in the form of internships for students and improving the professional skills of staff in partner health centers.
The project was launched in 2009 through the contract "Establishment of Field of Study Midwifery at Lewanika Nursing School in Mongu," which was implemented in 2009– 2010. In 2010 three minor contracts followed. These included delivery of medical supplies and equipment to partner medical facilities and purchase of equipment for school library and for future student dormitory. The construction of student hostel also began in 2010 and was finished in 2011. Since the new study program was not officially registered by the Ministry of Health and therefore does not have financial resources for its operations, the Czech Development Agency extended the project until 2012 to ensure its sustainability. During the years 2011 and 2012, new equipment was delivered to the Labor and Postpartum Department of Lewanika general hospital in addition to ensuring the operation of the study program.
Following the successful cooperation with Zambian partners, the continuing need to further improve the quality of health care in the Western Province and the Evaluation of the project prepared for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in June 2013, in which all the aspects of the project including sustainability and impact were evaluated very positively, Czech Development Agency decided to extend its support for the project and announced a new grant selection procedure.
